Sterling Silver Safety Chain for Bracelet – Tutela

$34.95

925 sterling silver safety chain, two stone-set stopper rings joined by a cable chain, angel drop with pink heart stone and plain cross drop, for snake chain charm bracelets.

More designs:

  • Unlike a pair of plain stoppers, the linked chain keeps the bracelet on the wrist if the clasp opens.
  • Compared with a bare safety chain, the angel and cross drops give the clasp area something to look at.
  • The 2.95 in (7.50 cm) cable chain hangs in a loose loop, which can catch a bag strap.
  • A pink heart on the angel is the only color, so it sits easily beside all-silver charms.

Our Take

Our team wore it across the clasp for a full day, and by evening the chain had settled into a loop under the wrist that a sleeve cuff brushed now and then. The pink heart on the angel is what people noticed first; the small plain cross barely registers from arm’s length. It has very little heft in the hand. That loop is also its weak point, since it can hook a bag strap or a coat pocket.

Description

What a Safety Chain Does Across the Clasp, and What It Does Not

This sterling silver safety chain for bracelet links two stopper rings with 2.95 in (7.50 cm) of cable chain. An angel holding a pink heart-shaped stone hangs from one stopper, and a plain polished cross hangs from the other. Both rings carry a row of clear stones around the rim.

Where the two stoppers go, and why that position matters

Thread one stopper onto each side of the clasp, as close to it as the bracelet allows. If the clasp is knocked open, the chain holds both ends together and the bracelet stays on the wrist instead of sliding off with every charm on it. The stopper rings also divide the bracelet into sections, so charms no longer drift down to the lowest point of the wrist and bunch together. Worn this way, the angel and the cross end up on either side of the clasp, which is already where the eye goes first on a charm bracelet.

The loop that makes it work is also its main weakness. Across the clasp the chain hangs in slack below the bracelet, and that slack can hook a bag strap, a sweater cuff or a seatbelt buckle. Our product photo shows it sitting away from the clasp as a decorative swag. It looks the same there. It protects nothing, though, because an open clasp simply lets both ends go and the stoppers travel with them. The two rings also take up room on the bracelet, so a chain that is already snug with charms may need the next size up. Anyone who dislikes a hanging loop should skip this piece: the loop is the part doing the work.

Checks worth running on your own bracelet first

  • The 0.18 in (0.45 cm) hole diameter matches the standard snake chain charm bracelet, the only type this is sized for.
  • Count the free chain you have left, since two stoppers plus the drops need space a full bracelet may not have.
  • The angel and cross are fixed to their own stoppers, so choose which side of the clasp each one sits on before threading.
  • Turn the loop toward the inside of the wrist if your day involves reaching into bags, drawers or coat pockets.

FAQ

Do I need to open my bracelet to add it?

Yes, the clasp has to be opened. Slide one stopper onto each end of the bracelet so the clasp sits between them, then close it again. The chain should hang loose across the clasp, not pulled tight.

Can I wear it away from the clasp, like in the photo?

It can, as decoration. The piece looks the same anywhere on the bracelet, but away from the clasp it no longer does its job: if the clasp opens, both ends come free and the stoppers slide off with them.

Can the angel and cross be moved to the other stopper?

No. Each drop is fixed to its own stopper by a closed ring, so the angel always hangs with one stopper and the cross with the other. You choose the sides when you thread it on, and can flip it later.

My bracelet is already full of charms

It depends on how full the bracelet is. The two stoppers and their drops take up chain that charms used to occupy. On a bracelet that already closes tightly around your charms, sizing up once is usually the easier fix.
