Faith Safety Chain Bracelet Charm – Caelis

$34.95

Sterling silver safety chain with two silicone-lined stopper beads, an angel dangle and a small polished cross, joined by a 2.28 in cable chain. Bracelet sold separately.

More designs:

  • Bridges the clasp, so the bracelet stays on your wrist even if the barrel springs open.
  • Grips the chain on silicone rather than metal, which keeps it from marking the snake links.
  • Adds an angel and a cross, so the safety chain reads as two charms rather than hardware.
  • Measures 2.28 in between the two stoppers, enough slack to bridge a clasp without pulling.
  • Takes two positions near the clasp, which is space you will not have for other charms.

Our Take

Three days in it had not moved once, which is the whole point of a safety chain and the thing a photo cannot show you. The silicone inside the beads grips the snake links firmly enough that we needed a fingernail to shift one. The angel and the cross hang below the chain and do swing into neighboring charms. It is small work: the stones read as glints rather than as stones.

Description

Insurance That Also Counts as Two Charms

The Faith Safety Chain Bracelet Charm is a pair rather than a single piece: two stopper beads joined by a 2.28 in (58 mm) cable chain. Each bead measures 0.36 in (9.4 mm) across and 0.18 in (4.6 mm) through, with a small winged motif and a prong-set stone on its face and a lilac silicone ring visible inside the hole. An angel hangs from one bead, a plain polished cross from the other, and a bezel-set cubic zirconia sits at the angel’s head. Sterling silver throughout, polished bright.

Most safety chains are exactly that and no more: two bare stoppers and a length of chain, bought as insurance and hidden at the back of the wrist. This one is built to be seen, which changes where it goes and what it costs you. The chain spans the clasp so that an opened barrel does not send the bracelet to the floor, and the silicone grip holds each of the stopper beads in place at the same time. What you give up is real estate. Two positions beside the clasp are now taken, and on a 7.1 in (18 cm) bracelet that is a noticeable share of the run. Anyone who wants a densely packed bracelet should buy a plain safety chain and put the difference into charms.

Fitting it across the clasp, not beside it

A safety chain only works in one position: one bead on each side of the barrel clasp, with the chain arcing over the closure. Fitted both on the same side it is decoration. Slide the first bead into place with the bracelet open, close the clasp, then push the second bead against it so the chain sits with a little slack rather than taut. Taut is what tears at the silicone over months.

What the silicone does, and when it stops

The lilac ring inside each bead is a silicone insert, and it is what makes a bead grip a chain it would otherwise slide along. It also has a service life. Alcohol, perfume and hand sanitizer dry it out, it hardens over a few years, and once it hardens the bead creeps. Nothing about that is fixable at a bench, since the insert is not a serviceable part. Keep sanitizer off it and it will last.

FAQ

Do I actually need a safety chain?

Not strictly, and it depends on the clasp. A barrel clasp in good condition rarely opens on its own. The case for a safety chain is a loaded bracelet, a clasp that has been opened daily for years, or a piece whose charms would be painful to replace.

Will it stop my charms sliding around as well?

Only the two it sits beside. The silicone grip holds each stopper bead where you put it, so charms cannot cross that point, but the rest of the bracelet still slides. Clips placed further along are what control the middle sections.

How much of the bracelet does it use up?

Less than it looks. The two beads take about 0.36 in of chain between them, and the 2.28 in span arcs above the clasp rather than lying along it. What it really claims is the two positions closest to the closure.

Do the dangles get tangled with other charms?

They can. Both dangles hang from the beads and swing when the wrist moves, so a large neighboring charm will meet them. Leaving one empty position on either side keeps the angel and the cross reading clearly instead of overlapping.
