Horizontal Cross Necklace Gold – Verso
$34.95
Gold-plated stainless steel box chain with a polished cross set sideways into the links, 17.7 in plus a 2 in extender, for everyday wear, open collar or tucked under a shirt.
More designs:
- Instead of a pendant swinging from a bail, the cross sits fixed in the chain and never flips over.
- The 0.16 in box links hold their shape, so the chain stays round rather than kinking flat.
- A 2 in extender lets you wear it at the base of the neck or down on the collarbone.
- Unlike sterling, the steel core will not tarnish, though the gold plating on top does wear at the clasp.

Our Take
The plating is the limit here, not the chain: steel underneath will not corrode, but the gold color on top is a finish with a lifespan. What we liked is the weight, 0.78 oz of box chain that lands with a thud and stays put on the collarbone. The cross is built into the chain line itself, so it cannot spin or flip. After a morning it sat exactly where we put it, slightly off center.

Description
Why This Cross Is Part of the Chain Rather Than a Pendant on It
This Horizontal Cross Necklace Gold is built as one piece. The cross is a station in the chain itself, with box links running into both sides of it, so there is no bail, no jump ring, and nothing that swings. Stainless steel underneath, gold plating on top.
The clasp end ages faster than the cross
Plating wears where metal rubs metal. On a necklace that means the clasp and the few links either side of it, opened and closed every morning with dry fingers and a little force. The cross sits mid-chain and touches only skin and cloth, so it keeps its color long after the clasp has gone pale. That is normal for plated steel, and it is not something a polishing cloth reverses. Nothing here is repairable at home. Warm water and a soft dry cloth are the whole maintenance routine. Spray cologne before the necklace goes on, not after.
Length decides how this reads. At 17.7 in (45 cm) the chain closes near the base of the neck, which on a wider frame sits close to a collar, and the 2 in (5 cm) extender chain takes it out to 19.7 in (50 cm), where the cross lands on the collarbone. That range is short by men’s standards. Anyone used to wearing chains at 22 or 24 in over a t-shirt will find this one sits higher than expected and vanishes under a buttoned collar. It suits an open shirt or bare skin, and not much else. The cross itself measures 0.72 in (1.85 cm) along its long axis and 0.51 in (1.3 cm) across, small enough to read as a detail from a conversational distance rather than the first thing anyone sees.
What the box chain does that a rope or a curb does not
- Box links sit square against the neck, so the chain lies flat instead of rolling over onto its side.
- Each link measures 0.16 in (0.4 cm) across, substantial on the eye without the bulk of a curb chain.
- The rounded profile gives a beard or a collar seam nothing sharp to catch on during the day.
- At 0.78 oz (22 g) the weight is noticeable, and a fine knit collar will sag under it eventually.
FAQ
Is 19.7 in long enough for a man?
It depends on your neck and how you dress. On a slimmer build it sits on the collarbone and shows above an open shirt. On a 17 in collar it rides high and disappears the moment you button up.
Will the gold turn my skin green?
Stainless steel does not react the way brass and copper alloys do, so green marking is unlikely. What happens instead is that the plating thins at the clasp and the gray steel shows through, which is visible rather than messy.
Can I keep it on at the gym or in the shower?
Better not. The steel handles water without issue, but soap film dulls the gold and repeated wetting works at the plating from the edges. Salt from sweat does the same thing more slowly.
Does the cross end up centered at the front?
No, and it is not meant to. The cross is fixed to one side of the chain by design, so it sits off center by roughly a hand’s width. It will drift a little as the chain moves through the day.
