Question 1

Does a silver cross necklace tarnish over time?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the material. 316L stainless steel does not tarnish and requires no maintenance beyond occasional cleaning with a soft cloth. 925 sterling silver will oxidize when exposed to air, moisture, and skin oils, developing a darker surface patina. This is entirely reversible: a silver polishing cloth or a mild silver-cleaning solution restores the original brightness within minutes. Storing sterling silver in an airtight pouch between wears significantly slows the process.

Question 2

Is a silver cross necklace safe for sensitive skin?

Accepted Answer

316L stainless steel is widely considered hypoallergenic and is used in medical implants and body jewelry specifically because it does not release nickel at reactive levels. 925 sterling silver contains copper as its secondary alloy, which can occasionally cause reactions in people with a known copper sensitivity, though this is uncommon. For wearers with documented metal allergies, the stainless steel options in this collection are the more dependable choice.

Question 3

What chain length works best for a silver cross necklace?

Accepted Answer

An 18″ chain is the most versatile length for most adults, sitting at the collarbone and working well with both casual and dressed outfits. A 16″ chain positions the pendant higher on the neck, ideal for a smaller cross worn as a standalone piece. A 20″–22″ chain drops the pendant to mid-chest, which suits larger pendants and layered styles. Men typically prefer 20″–24″ lengths to account for broader chest and shoulder proportions.

Question 4

Can I wear a silver cross necklace in the shower or while swimming?

Accepted Answer

316L stainless steel is water-resistant and will not rust or corrode from regular water exposure, including showers and casual swimming. 925 sterling silver can withstand occasional water contact without damage, but prolonged exposure to chlorinated pools, saltwater, or sulfate-containing soaps accelerates tarnishing noticeably. For a piece worn in and out of water daily, a stainless steel option from this collection is the more practical long-term choice.

Question 5

What is the difference between a silver cross necklace and a sterling silver cross necklace?

Accepted Answer

“Silver” in jewelry is a descriptive color term that can apply to any silver-toned piece, regardless of base material — including silver-plated brass or stainless steel with a cool-toned finish. “Sterling silver” refers specifically to an alloy of 92.5% pure silver, a composition required to carry the 925 hallmark under US and international standards. All sterling pieces at Crystia bear that mark. The stainless steel options in this collection are not plated — their silver tone is inherent to the metal, with no coating that could peel or wear through over time.

Question 6

Is a silver cross necklace a good gift?

Accepted Answer

A silver cross necklace is among the most consistently well-received faith-based gifts in American jewelry, fitting for Baptism, Confirmation, First Communion, graduation, Christmas, and milestone birthdays. Its neutral, cool tone makes it easier to pair with existing jewelry than gold for most recipients. For gifting without a known size preference, an 18″ chain with a mid-sized pendant in the 25–30mm range is the safest choice for an adult wearer.
